Mumbai, March 8 (IANS). The Public Health Department of Maharashtra said on Saturday that there have been a total of 12 deaths due to GBS in Maharashtra so far. Six of these have been confirmed as GBS and six have died as suspicious GBS. No new suspicious case of GBS came to light on Saturday.
According to the release released by the department, GBS has been diagnosed in 197 patients and 28 cases are of suspected GBS.
Of these, 46 patients are from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), 95 PMC from newly added villages, 33 Pimpri from Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, 37 from Pune Rural and 14 other districts. Of these patients, 179 have been discharged so far, 24 in ICU and 15 are on ventilator.
The release said, “An autoimmune disorder, in which the body’s immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system. The weakness of the muscle and paralysis in severe cases are characterized by paralysis.”
Common symptoms of GBS include sudden weakness/paralysis in the hands or feet, trouble walking or sudden weakness and diarrhea (for frequent periods).
The department has asked to keep the quality of water good, especially for drinking boiled water. In addition, the food should be fresh and clean and should avoid stale food and partially cooked food (chicken or mutton).
The department has appealed to the citizens not to panic, but go to the government hospital in case of any symptoms. Citizens should also implement preventive measures.

It is worth mentioning that on January 27, in view of the increasing cases of GBS in Pune, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare deployed a seven -member team to support public health intervention and management in the state. The high level team of the Center consisted of multi-disciplinary experts. It aims to support state health officials in establishing public health intervention and management in view of GBS’s suspected and strong cases.
