The Congress on Saturday took a sarcasm at the government to implement different GST rates and said that after popcorn, Donuts now also have a turn to get GST disease.
Congress General Secretary (Communications in -charge) Jairam Ramesh cited a media report on X, stating that Singapore -based series Madon over Donuts are facing tax notice of Rs 100 crore to allegedly classify their business wrongly and pay 5 percent GST, which claimed that it is a restaurant service, while 18 percent tax is paid on bakery goods.
He wrote on X, “After popcorn, Donuts are now at risk of GST.”
The Congress leader said that the matter is now in the Bombay High Court and said a lot for “ease in business”. Ramesh said, “Therefore GST 2.0 is so important.”
In December last year, the Congress said that under GST, three separate tax “absurd talk” for popcorn’s “absurd talk” only reveals the growing complexity of the system and asked if the Modi government would show the courage to start a complete change to implement GST 2.0.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that GST rates would be lower, while the Congress had said last Sunday that any change in tax should be wider than mere reduction in rate. Also, the Congress emphasized the need to make GST 2.0 more simple and less punitive.
Ramesh said that his party has envisaged the GST 2.0 – really “good and simple tax” in its manifesto for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and is committed to that approach.
