Tesla Model-Y and Model-3 in India Update: Tesla, which is one of the world’s most prominent electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has filed a homologation application for its model-3 and model-Y in India. This process is required to get permission to sell a vehicle in India and drive on the road. This is considered an important step towards Tesla’s official admission in India.
What is homologist kya hai?
Homological is a process under which a vehicle is certified to the country’s safety, pollution, and technical standards. In India, this process is done under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules – CMVR and is approved by the Indian Vehicle Research Association (ARAI – Automotive Research Association of India) or International Center for Automotive Technology (ICAT).

For the first time in 2021, a company called Tesla India Motors and Energy Private Limited was registered in Bengaluru. In 2021-22, Tesla tested Model-3 and Model-Y in India, but did not launch due to lack of tax exemption from the government. In 2024, the Government of India formed a policy to give a concession in import duty on electric vehicles, encouraging Tesla to trade in India.

Competition will increase: Indian companies (TATA, Mahindra) and other foreign brands (Byd, Hyundai, KIA) will have to improve their EV technology.
Possible challenges
