Nagpur violence: Mayawati urged Maharashtra government to take action against "chaotic elements"

Amidst the uproar over the demand of the Sangh Parivar organizations to remove the tomb of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Tuesday morning described such demands as “not right” and “mutual brotherhood, peace and harmony”. He urged the Maharashtra government to take action against “chaotic elements”.

Fearing the deterioration of the situation, Mayawati urged the Mahayuti government of Maharashtra to take strict action against the “chaotic elements”. He said, “It is not right to damage or break someone’s grave or mausoleum in Maharashtra as it is spoiling mutual brotherhood, peace and harmony there. The government should take strict action against miscreants, especially in Maharashtra.”

The BSP chief posted on X, “It is not right to damage or break someone’s tomb or samadhi in Maharashtra as it is spoiling mutual brotherhood, peace and harmony there.” The government should take strict action against such unruly elements, especially in Nagpur. Otherwise the situation may be worse, which is not right. ”

His response came after violence erupted in Hanspuri area of Nagpur, where unknown persons vandalized shops, set fire to vehicles and pelted stones. According to reports, tension in the city increased after the earlier clash between two groups in the palace area.

An eyewitness from Hanspuri described the chaos created by the masked group. Eyewitnesses said, “A team came here. Their faces were hidden from the scarf. They had sharp weapons, stickers and bottles in their hands. They started a ruckus, vandalized shops and stoned. They also set fire to vehicles.”

According to an official notification by the Maharashtra Police, a curfew has been imposed in several areas of Nagpur city under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Protection (BNSS) after the tension demanding Aurangzeb’s tomb to be removed.

As per the official order issued by Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravinder Kumar, the ban will remain implemented till the next notice. Orders said, “During the lockdown period, no person should not leave the house for any other reason other than medical reasons nor to gather more than five people inside the house.

The order stated that, “During the lockdown period, no person should not get out of the house for any reason other than medical reasons nor more than five people gather indoors. Also, orders are passed to stop any kind of rumor and ban all such tasks.”

The police have been empowered to close roads in the affected areas to maintain law and order. Any person violating the curfew is punishable under Section 223 of the Code of Justice of India (BNS). “However, the order clarified that it will not” apply to police officers/employees on duty as well as government/administrative officers/employees, students present for essential services and persons belonging to the fire department and various departments.
