Registration of more than 96000 'adopted vehicles' since 2020: Central government

New Delhi, 21 March (IANS). Giving information in Parliament on Friday, the government said that since 2020, more than 96000 vehicles have been registered as ‘adopted vehicles’, which have been designed especially for the differently abled.

Adopted vehicle is called a motor vehicle, which is designed and designed for the use of physically handicapped (partial disabled), disabled. Apart from this, the presence of such facility for the use of a disabled person in a vehicle also brings the vehicle to the category of ‘adopted vehicles’.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Steel and Heavy Industries, Bhupatiraju Srinivas Verma, said, “A total of 96,265 vehicles were registered as ‘adopted vehicles’ during the period from January 1, 2020 to 19 March 2025.

The Union Minister said that sections 52, 1989 Rule 47A, Rule 47B of the Motor Vehicles Act and Rule 112 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules have provisions related to the approval of altitude or retro fitment and change in the vehicle.

Orthopedic physical disability or disabilities with more than 40 percent disability can buy adopted cars with a certificate from the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) at a concessional rate of GST.

According to the ministry, the concession can only be obtained for motor vehicles with lengths more than 4000 mm.

Petrol, LPG or CNG -powered vehicles should not exceed 1200 cc and the engine capacity of diesel -powered vehicles should not exceed 1500 cc.

Verma said that all vehicles sold on the basis of certificate issued by MHI and concessional GST will be registered as “adopted vehicles” as per the Motor Vehicles Act.

The central government supports the differently -abled to buy/install accessories like motor -powered three -run cycles, wheelchairs, prozelis and orthosis, running rods, accessible smartphones, smart cans, low vision aid and hearing aid.
