US President Donald Trump on Friday night (local time) ordered the Attorney General Paam Bandy to review the conduct of lawyers and law firms who have filed baseless cases against the Trump administration or attempted to stop the immigration initiative. According to the report, in a memorandum released late at night, Trump raised the old controversies against the lawyers who had opposed him and vowed to punish by canceling security approval on lawyers and law firms and cancellation of the federal contracts with him.
What is Trump’s order?
According to the report, the move has made Trump’s action on the legal community in the US wider. The memorandum states the Attorney General, “Penalty action should be taken against lawyers and law firms involved in baseless, inconsistent and disturbing legal proceedings against the United States or in cases of federal departments and agencies.” It has also been said that the Attorney General should review the conduct of lawyers and their firms sued against the federal government in the last 8 years and recommend additional steps based on this, in which the re -review of security approval, termination of contracts or other appropriate action can be recommended.
Which lawyers were targeted?
The real effect of this memorandum is not clear because its language is very widespread and does not state what kind of conduct will cause punishment against lawyers and firms. The memorandum mainly targeted the lawyers who have opposed the Trump administration in immigration matters and ordered that the Attorney General should file disciplinary complaints against the lawyers whose conduct as the administration considers unfair.
The recent targeting the legal community by Donald Trump seems to have received concessions from at least one top legal firm this week. The White House said in a post on its ‘X’ account, “Whatever we do, we are restoring the law, restoring the system and restoring public security in the US and we are bringing back respect, honesty and accountability at the highest levels of FBI, Department of Justice and our government.”
