Pope Francis returned home after staying in hospital for five weeks due to deadly double pneumonia

by Rajeev Bansal
March 24, 2025

Weak Pope Francis returned to the Vatican on Sunday after five weeks in the hospital due to deadly double pneumonia and while returning home before starting two months fixed rest and recovery, he suddenly stopped in his favorite basilica.

The 88 -year -old Pope was sitting on the next passenger seat of his white Fiat 500 and was wearing a tube to supplement oxygen in the nose, when he entered the Perugino Gate in the Vatican City, where his return gave him relief, as he feared that his illness could be deadly or the pope may have to resign.

Francis’ convoy from Jamelli Hospital initially overtaken the Vatican and stopped at St. Mary Major Basilica, circling across the city, where the Pope’s favorite Madonna statue is located and where they always go to pray after traveling abroad.

He did not get out of the car, but he gave Basilica’s cardinal a bouquet of flowers to place the salus -populi romantic icon. The seedantine style painting on wood is revered by the Romans and is so important for Francis that she has opted to have a bourgeal. Before leaving the hospital, Francis was moved to a balcony towards its main entrance and showed the thumb and greeted the crowd.

Hundreds of people gathered on Sunday morning to say goodbye and get the first glimpse of Francis in five weeks. “I am looking at this woman with yellow flowers. Well done!” Francis, who looked bloated, said in a breathless voice. Before being taken back in, he gave a weak indication of the cross, it seemed that he was panting for breath. “Viva Il Papa!” And the slogans of “Papa Francesko” began to echo, including patients who were brought out only to see their brief appearance. Pope is at home to relax

Doctors say that Francis needs rest and health benefits in Vatican for two months, during which they should avoid meeting large groups of people or tired themselves. But he said that he should eventually be able to resume all his general activities.

Returning home after staying in hospital for the longest hospital for his 12-year-old Pope and recent Pope history has brought relief to Vatican and Catholic devotees, who were eagerly upset after 38 days of medical ups and downs, and wondering if Francis would survive.

Dr. Rosella Rusomando said, “Today I am very happy,” who was in Jamelli on Sunday, but she did not treat Francis. “It shows that all our prayers, all the garland prayers from all over the world, brought this grace.”

Pope will get 24 hours of care at home

In the Vatican, the pilgrims gathered in the St. Peter Basilica as a whole year to participate in the holy year of 2025. They rose in St. Peters Square and proceeded to groups from the holy gate, while the large TV screen in Chowk was operational to broadcast the reception at a hospital in Francis.

“I saw them and I am very blessed that I am here,” said Indonesia’s Nun Sister Emailda Legak, who saw Francis in the hospital. “We constantly pray for them, for good health so that we can keep them with us to the end” especially because it is the birth anniversary year.

There is no special arrangement at Domas Santa Marta, the Vatican Hotel, where Francis lives in two -room suite on the second floor next to Basilica. They will get complementary oxygen and 24-hour medical care as required, although his personal physician Dr. Luigi Carbon said that he hopes that as his lungs are fine, Francis will reduce the need for help in breathing.

Although pneumonia infection has been successfully treated, Francis will continue to take oral medicine for some time for fungal infections in his lungs and continue his respiratory and physical physiotherapy. Carbon said, “For three or four days he has been asking when he can go home, so he is very happy.”

Two life-threatening crisis

The Pope of Argentina, who is a chronic lung disease and one of his lungs was removed in puberty, was admitted to Jamelli on 14 February after bronchitis deteriorated. Doctors first diagnosed a complex bacterium, viral and fungal respiratory tract infection and immediately after that, both lungs became pneumonia. Blood tests showed symptoms of anemia, low blood platelets and renal failure, which later cured two blood transfusions.

The most severe shocks began on February 28, when Francis had an acute cough attack and vomited, which led to a non-active mechanical ventilation mask to help them breathe.

A few days later he faced two more respiratory crises, for which doctors had to manually withdraw the mucus in a very high amount of mucus from their lungs, after which they started sleeping at night with ventilation masks to help clean the fluid stored in their lungs.

He was never integrated and never lost consciousness. Doctors said that they were always cautious and ally, although they say that their weight has reduced slightly due to natural appetite. “Unfortunately yes, there was a moment when many people were saying that they could not escape. And it was painful for us,” said Mario Balsamo, the owner of the coffee shop in front of the Gameley. “Instead, after getting holiday today, we are very happy that they are fine and we hope that they will recover soon and get their strength back.” ‘I am still alive!’

Dr. Sergio ALFI, Medical and Surgical Head in Gameley, who coordinated the medical team of Francis, stressed that all the patients who are developed in such serious cases of double pneumonia do not live, it is far from the hospital to be discharged from the hospital. He said that Francis’ life was at risk twice, during two acute respiratory crises, and the Pope at that time lost its normal good comic. “But one morning we went to examine his lungs and asked him how he is. When he replied, ‘I am still alive’, we came to know that they are fine and their mood was cured,” he told at a news conference late on Saturday night.

Alpherry confirmed that Francis was still having trouble speaking due to damage to his lungs and respiratory muscles. But he said that such problems are common, especially in older patients, and predicted that their voice would eventually return.

There is no confirmation yet

Vatican spokesperson Mateo Bruni refused to confirm any upcoming program, including Francis’ involvement in Easter services at the end of the month with King Charles III on 8 April. But Carbon said that he hoped that Francis may be sufficient to travel to Turkey to participate in an important worldwide anniversary in late May. Only St. John Paul II set a record of being a long hospitalization in 1981, when he spent 55 days in a gameli for the treatment of minor surgery and infection.
