He was raised in Shimla. His father wanted him to become an IAS officer but Chopra studied the performance art in the college and graduated in art from the University of Punjab. There was a strong theater movement in Shimla during the period 1957–1961 and Chopra enjoyed it. He watched a lot of Hindi and English films and came to Bombay in the early 1960s after graduating and joined the Circulation Department of Times of India due to his degree of art. Also kept going to the studio and trying to get a break in films.
The first film was done in 1960
Prem Chopra made his debut in Bollywood in 1960 with the twisted Mud Mud Ki Nahi, which did not go well. In 1960, he got a Punjabi film Chaudhary Karnail Singh with the star Jabin Jalil established and the film won the National Award and Prem was recognized. But till 1964, he did not have any more hit Hindi film except his first Punjabi hit films Karnail Singh and Sapna. He then played the role of Sukhdev in the martyr in 1964, one of his rare positive lead roles and was a hit. His performance in hit films like Sikander-e-Azam, Nishan, Virgari, Third Manzil, Mera Saya and Upkar in 1965–67 showed his versatility. After the third floor and favor, he was flooded with films as a villain. Prem Chopra continued to work with TOI, while he was already part of box-office hit films like Nishan, Sikander A Azam in 1965 and Sagai, Mera Saya in 1966. He left the Times of India after favor in 1967.
Two ways film born Dhakad Villain
As a villain, he gained fame across India by acting on two ways with superstar Rajesh Khanna. The Rajesh-love pair acted in 19 films from 1969 to 1991 in 19 films.
