Aurangzeb Tomb Controversy: A person claiming to be a descendant of the last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar has written a letter to the United Nations. In a letter to the United Nations, the person has asked for his safety, referring to Aurangzeb’s grave. The controversy related to Aurangzeb’s tomb has been very much discussed in recent times. Violence erupted during a rally in Nagpur last month, demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s grave. Aurangzeb’s grave Chhatrapati is located in Khuldabad in Sambhajinagar district. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district was previously known as Aurangabad.

Who is Yakub Habibuddin Tussi

Yakub Habibuddin Tussi claims that he is a descendant of the Mughals. Tussi has written a letter to United Nations Secretary -General Antonio Guterres. Tussi claims in his letter that he is Mutavalli (career) of that Waqf property, where Aurangzeb’s grave. He said that the tomb has been declared a ‘monument of national importance’ and is preserved under the ancient monument and archaeological site and relics Act, 1958.

The descendants of Bahadur Shah Zafar have demanded deployment of security personnel for its safety, citing international laws. He said in the letter, “Films, media outlets and social platforms have been played with people’s feelings due to incorrectly presenting historical facts, which is causing unfair opposition.”

‘International laws will be violated’

Yakub Habibuddin Tussi said in the letter, “Destruction, neglect or illegal change of such monuments will be a violation of international laws.” The letter also referred to the signing of UNESCO Convention, 1972 from India to the conservation of world cultural and natural heritage.

‘Aurangzeb’s grave gets security’

Tussi has urged the United Nations Secretary -General’s office to take cognizance of the case. He requested that the United Nations Secretary -General’s office instruct the Central Government and ASI to ensure that Aurangzeb’s grave be provided “full legal security, security and protection” according to national and international laws.
