New Delhi. The Supreme Court has criticized Congress MP Rahul Gandhi for strict advice for abusive remarks on freedom fighter Veer Savarkar. The apex court said that people like Veer Savarkar brought us freedom and you have this kind of behavior towards him. The court cautioned Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, to make irresponsible statements about freedom fighters and said that if he made any such objectionable remarks again in future, the court could take automatic cognizance after which serious consequences would have to be faced.
A bench of Justice Dipankar Dutta and Justice Manmohan commented that Mahatma Gandhi had honored Savarkar and Indira Gandhi himself wrote a letter to him. The court warned Rahul Gandhi that he should understand the historical context before commenting on such celebrities. The Supreme Court Bench, however, also gave relief to Rahul Gandhi. The bench stayed the Allahabad High Court’s order refusing to cancel the summons issued in the defamation case filed against Rahul Gandhi in a derogatory remarks of Veer Savarkar.
On April 4, the Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court refused to ban summons against Rahul Gandhi. After which Rahul Gandhi approached the Supreme Court. Significantly, in the year 2022, Rahul Gandhi took out the Pad Pad Yatra in 2022. During that padyatra, Rahul Gandhi in his speech called Veer Savarkar a servant of the British. The Congress leader had alleged that Veer Savarkar had succumbed to the British in fear and had apologized. An advocate had filed a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi’s comment.
