New Delhi, 30 April (IANS). The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the development, maintenance and management proposal of the development, maintenance and management of the 166.80 km 4-lane Greenfield National Highway in Meghalaya to Panchgram (near Silchar) in Meghalaya (near Silchar) in Meghalaya on Wednesday.
This highway will be developed as a high-speed corridor on hybrid annuity mode, which will cost Rs 22,864 crore.
Of the total 166.80 km highway projects, 144.80 km will be in Meghalaya while 22 km km will be in Assam.
According to the official statement released after the CCEA meeting, the proposed Greenfield high-speed corridor will improve traffic from Guwahati to Silchar. The development of this corridor will increase connectivity between Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and Barak Valley in Assam and Guwahati and will reduce the distance and time of travel. This will also help in increasing the country’s logistics capacity.
The statement further said, this corridor passes through the cement and coal production areas of Meghalaya. This will improve contact between Assam and Meghalaya and will boost economic development including development of industries in Meghalaya. This corridor will serve national and international tourists coming from Guwahati Airport, Shillong Airport and Silchar Airport. Also, this highway will promote tourism in the northeast.
This important project will also improve inter-city connectivity between Guwahati, Shillong and Silchar, which passes through Ri Bhoi, Eastern Khasi Hills, West Jantia Hills, Eastern Jantia Hills in Meghalaya and Cachar district in Assam. Along with this, it will reduce congestion on existing NH-06 and PM speed power will increase the development of transport infrastructure according to the National Master Plan.
The statement said that the project is integrated with major transport corridors including NH -27, NH -106, NH -206, NH -37, which provides uninterrupted contact to Guwahati, Shillong, Silchar, Dingpasoh, Ummlong, Framar, Khaliriyat, Ratchera, Umkiang and Kalain.
According to the government’s statement, the Shillong-Sildhar Corridor will play an important role in regional economic development, which would improve contact between Guwahati, Shillong, Silchar, Imphal, Aizawl and Agartala. The project is in line with the government’s self-reliant India’s attitude, which increases the infrastructure by promoting employment generation and socio-economic development in Meghalaya, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.
