Sources said that the Congress Working Committee will meet at 4 pm on Friday to discuss the government’s decision and further strategy at the office of 24, Akbar Road. The Congress Working Committee met on 24 April last week in view of the Pahalgam terror attack.
Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi has said that he welcomes the “sudden” decision taken by the government to include caste calculations in the upcoming census after the government. But he insisted that the Center should tell the deadline for its implementation.
Giving credit to the continuous campaign conducted by the Congress for the government’s announcement on the caste census, Rahul said that he still suspects that this decision can go on the path of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the matter of implementation. He demanded the government to tell a specific date for this.
The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha said that it is clear that the pressure made by the Congress for the caste census has done the work.
Many opposition parties, including the Congress, are demanding caste -based census across the country and making it a big election issue. Some states like Bihar, Telangana and Karnataka have conducted surveys in this regard.
Announcing the decision taken by the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA), Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said on Wednesday that the census comes under the jurisdiction of the center, but some states have done caste calculations in a ‘non-transparent’ manner in the name of survey, which has created confusion in the society.
