Chandigarh The SYL Himachal Marg Committee, which is struggling to bring the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal via Himachal Pradesh, has decided to launch a comprehensive public awareness campaign in Haryana. In the next four months, people and students in villages, blocks, colleges and universities will be told about the importance of this alternative route and the apathy of the government. The chairman of the committee Jitendra Nath, resident Bhiwani (Haryana), gave this information at a press conference at Chandigarh Press Club today. He said that the SYL canal project is stuck in political and legal complications between Haryana and Punjab. The committee has suggested an alternative route to make this canal soon, which will start from Bhakra Dam in Himachal Pradesh and reach the Tangri River in Panchkula via Himachal. Jitendra Nath counted many benefits of this alternative route.
He said that this will postpone a conflict between constitutional institutions and protect the federal structure. This route will pass through the government -barren land of Himachal Pradesh, which the Himachal government can easily transfer. The natural slope of water from Bhakra Dam is helpful in power generation and this water goes into the Sutlej Canal. The Sutlej River flows about 11 kilometers in Himachal Pradesh, from where the SYL canal can be added. At this point, the height of the Sutlej canal is much higher than Panchkula, Ambala and Jansui Head, which can easily reach Haryana through gravity.
Jitendra Nath claimed that if the intention of the central government is clear, SYL water can be transported to South Haryana within a year. This requires only political will. He also clarified that there will be no harm to the farmers of Punjab through this route and no cuts will be made in the water part of Haryana. He said that he has done a thorough study of this alternative route, which is a viable solution to bring SYL water to Haryana in a peaceful manner.
The committee will organize awareness programs in the next four months and if the government does not take concrete steps in this direction, then a demonstration will be held at Jantar Mantar in Delhi and a memorandum will be submitted to the Prime Minister. Jitendra Nath suggested that the BJP governments at Haryana and the Center should build a canal from Bhakra Dam to Bari (Himachal Pradesh) and then to the Tangri River near Panchkula via Pinjore, which can be moved to Jansui Head.
He explained this proposal through a documentary and told that the construction of the canal beyond the Jansui Head has already been completed. He argued that due to the construction of the canal via Himachal, the financial burden on the Haryana government will reduce and the problem of rehabilitation will not come. A 1100 MW hymns project can also be set up on this route.
Referring to the 43 years suffering from the farmers of South Haryana, he said that the water level has fallen due to non -availability of SYL water and drinking water has also been contaminated, which has increased diseases like cancer. Jitendra Nath criticized all political parties, who have only done politics on the SYL issue.
He expressed apprehension that some parties may mislead the farmers by misleading the farmers, which the committee wants to avoid. He also welcomed the move by the central government to end the Indus Water Treaty and suggested that the water problem of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan can be overcome to a great extent if the Chenab water is brought to the Beas river.
