Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan said on Monday that India’s wheat production is expected to reach a record 11.53 million tonnes this year. The adverse conditions of the weather are unlikely to affect this estimate. Chauhan said that the crop has now reached maturity state in all the major wheat producing states of the country. A government statement quoted the minister as saying, “Summer heat and high temperatures will actually help accelerate the harvesting process. So there is no possibility of any change in other advance estimates.” It is clear from this announcement that the situation in the country remains strong and the prices of other wheat products including flour are expected to be stable.

Harvesting was completed in these states

According to the second estimate released by the Ministry of Agriculture in March, the production of wheat in the country in the year 2024-25 is expected to reach 11.53 million tonnes, which is about 2% higher than the previous year’s 11.33 million tonnes. Wheat harvesting has been completed in Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat, while in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, there was a harm in some parts till 2 May. Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan said that the situation of the central food store of the country is satisfactory and this is more than the necessary buffer stock. So far, wheat stock has reached 177.08 lakh tonnes, which is much higher than 74.60 lakh tonnes of buffer. Similarly, rice reserves have also been recorded up to 389.05 lakh tonnes as compared to buffer requirement of 135.80 lakh tonnes.

Paddy sowing acreage increased

Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, while reviewing the progress of sowing of Zayed crops, said that these short term summer crops – which are usually grown between March to June – have seen a good increase in sowing this year.

As of May 2, the area under sowing of paddy has increased to 32.02 lakh hectare, which was 28.57 lakh hectares in the same period last year. At the same time, sowing of pulses has also increased from 18.47 lakh hectares to 20.67 lakh hectares. A significant increase in the area of moong and urad has also been recorded.

Minister Chauhan asked to prioritize the purchase of pulses like arhar, urad, gram and lentils and directed the officials to ensure timely payment of minimum support price (MSP) to farmers.

The statement also said that time is still available for sowing tomatoes, onions and other vegetables, and the existing market prices are expected to achieve normal sowing area due to encouragement. Officials described the weather and reservoir conditions across the country as favorable, making better possibilities for the current agricultural session.
