New Delhi, 13 May (IANS). The central government has decided to celebrate Ayurveda Day every year on 23 September. Ayurveda has been celebrated every year to promote Ayurveda as a scientific evidence-based and overall medical system, but its date was not fixed.
Ayurveda plays an important role in preventive health care and welfare. Till now Ayurveda Day was celebrated on the day of Dhanteras. Being based on the Hindu calendar, its date on the Ayurveda English calendar used to change every year.
The Ministry of AYUSH also mentioned that the date of Dhanteras in the next decade would be widespread changing between 15 October and 12 November, which would lead to logical challenges in holding events at national and international levels.
The Ministry of AYUSH formed a committee to check for this incompatible and establish a stable reference point for national and global festivals. The expert panel proposed four possible dates, with the date of 23 September appeared as the best option. This decision was based on both practical and symbolic ideas.
The new date 23 September, Sharad coincides with the equinox, when the day and night are almost equal. This astronomical phenomenon symbolizes balance in nature, which fully matches with Ayurveda philosophy, which emphasizes balance between mind, body and soul.
The Ministry of AYUSH urges individuals, health professionals, academic bodies and international partners to adopt on the newly set date and actively participate in the Ayurveda Day celebrations on 23 September every year.
The Ministry sees this change as an opportunity to further incorporate Ayurveda into global health negativity and to promote timeless value in the form of its preventive and permanent healthcare system.
