The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has got the new chairman. President of India, Dr. Draupadi Murmu, former Defense Secretary and Senior Administrator. Ajay Kumar has been appointed as the new president of UPSC. The post became vacant on 29 April after the completion of the term of former President Preeti Sudan.
Who is Ajay Kumar?
Ajay Kumar is a 1985 batch retired IAS officer and has held several important positions during his administrative career. He has been an officer of Kerala cadre. Ajay Kumar served as the Defense Secretary of the Government of India from 23 August 2019 to 31 October 2022. He is known for his administrative skills and strategic decision making ability.
Anuradha Prasad was also appointed.
Apart from this, former bureaucrat Anuradha Prasad was also sworn in as UPSC member on Friday. Anuradha Prasad is a 1986 batch officer of Odisha cadre and has contributed significantly to her services. She has obtained a bachelor’s degree in economics from Lady Shri Ram College for Women and a master’s degree in history from the University of Delhi. In addition, he has also received a master’s degree in development administration from Birmingham University, UK.
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts India’s most prestigious Civil Services Examination through which officers are selected for IAS (Indian Administrative Service), IFS (Indian Foreign Service), IPS (Indian Police Service) and many other central services.
The President of the country appoints UPSC President. This appointment has been made under Section 316 (1) of the Constitution. At least half of the members are members of public service (serving or retired) with at least 10 years of experience under the Government of India or the State Government. The President has the right to remove the President from the post. Let us tell you that the members of UPSC remain in their posts from the date of their appointment for a period of 6 years or till the age of 65 years (whichever is earlier). The age limit for members of the State Commission or Joint Commission is 62 years.
