Supreme Court dismisses new petitions challenging Waqf Amedment Act: Top court rejected new petitions challenging Waqf Amendment Act

New Delhi. The Supreme Court dismissed the new petitions challenging the legislation of the Waqf Amendment Act, refusing to hear. A bench of the top court Chief Justice Justice BR Gawai and Justice Augustine George Christ expressed displeasure over those who filed new petitions, saying that everyone wants his name to come in newspapers. The bench once again clarified that the issue of interim relief will be heard on 20 May. Earlier on April 17, the Supreme Court had clarified that only five of the total petitions challenging the law would be heard.

Earlier, during the hearing held on Thursday, the apex court had asked the Center to currently neither make the Waqf properties non-disrespect nor make any appointment in the Central Waqf Parishad and boards. The Muslim side claims that the government is violating their rights through the Waqf Amendment Act. Therefore, this law should be canceled immediately. Whereas in the counter -affidavit filed by the Central Government in the Supreme Court, it has been said that all the petitions filed against the Waqf Amendment Act should be dismissed. The government said that the court does not have the right to stay directly or indirectly on the legal provisions of the law.

The government has stated that on the basis of intensive study, analysis, the amendment in Waqf has been taken which required, the opinion of all parties has also been taken and the amendment has been finalized after considering their objections. Earlier, a bench headed by former Supreme Court CJI Justice Sanjeev Khanna was hearing the matter but before his retirement, Sanjeev Khanna said that this is a serious matter and it is necessary to hear every party on it, so now the new CJI Justice Gawai will hear it on it.
