Even after 70 years of the extinction of cheetahs in India, the government is continuously working to increase their numbers in the country. In this perspective, leaving leopard is being considered in Shahgarh Balj area of Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan.
Leopards from Jaisalmer will be brought to Madhya Pradesh
After the release of government documents, information about this project has been revealed. Accordingly, leopards will be released in some areas. Giving information about this, another official said that after Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary in Mandsaur district of Madhya Pradesh, leopards will be released in Banni grasslands of Kutch district of Gujarat and then in Shahgarh Bulj area of Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan.
‘Project Cheetah’ will start in 2022
70 years after the extinction of cheetahs in India, the central government launched the ‘Project Cheetah’ in September 2022 to bring out cheetahs in the country. As part of efforts to re -establish the cheetahs, 20 African cheetahs were brought to the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. Of these, eight leopards were brought from Namibia in September 2022 and 12 leopards from South Africa in February 2023.
So far 26 cheetah cubs have been born.
According to official data, since then 26 cheetah cubs have been born in India, out of which 19 have survived. 11 cubs have been released into the forest, while the remaining cubs are placed in the enclosures in the Kuno National Park.
