Thanks to the country for India's commitment and support to the epidemic agreement: WHO

New Delhi, 22 May (IANS). The Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adnom Ghebreesus thanked the country for India’s commitment and support for the important and historic agreement made to deal with the epidemic.

This week, the WHO member countries at the 78th World Health Assembly (WHA) unanimously adopted the agreement after a three -year conversation in Geneva.

India is also a signator of this treaty, which has been in talks since the Kovid-19 outbreak. The purpose of this treaty is to bridge the gaps and inequalities of global healthcare in the event of an epidemic in future.

The WHO chief said in a post on the social media platform X, “Hello Prime Minister Narendra Modi to join us virtually to the historic 78th WHA on the occasion of adopting the epidemic agreement. We are grateful to India’s commitment and support to WHO.”

Addressing the WHA through video conferencing, PM Modi said that the WHO epidemic Treaty is a common commitment, which requires more global cooperation.

Congratulating the successful talks of the treaty, PM Modi said, “The WHO epidemic treaty is a common commitment to fight the future epidemics through more global cooperation.”

He also expressed India’s desire to share his experiences and best practices with the world, especially Global South.

The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of building a healthy planet, as well as ensured that no one was left behind.

He said, “The future of a healthy world depends on increases, an integrated vision and cooperation.”

Meanwhile, Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava, who led the Indian delegation at WHA, also congratulated the WHA and member countries on the historic progress made towards advancing the epidemic treaty.

Srivastava emphasized the importance of facing future health challenges and expressed his commitment to ensure that no one was left behind.

“The epidemic agreement should ensure similar access to medical measures, timely and transparent data sharing and promote technology sharing and capacity building especially for global South,” he said.
