The cholera spread in Sudan has killed at least 172 people in the last one week and more than 2,500 people were found ill. Officials gave this information on Tuesday.
According to health officials, the highest number of cases have come up in the capital Khartum and the city of Omdurman adjacent to it. The infection has also been confirmed in the North Cordophen, Senar, Gajira, White Neel and Neel River Provinces.
Sudan coordinator of ‘Doctor Vidout Borders’ (MSF), Joyce Bekkar said that in the midst of May, there have been speed in infection cases. Only last week MSF teams treated more than 2,000 suspected patients. He said that Omdurman’s MSF centers have a huge crowd of patients and “the situation is very worrying”. Many patients are arriving late, making it difficult to save them.
Sudan Health Minister Hatham Ibrahim said that 600-700 new cases have been coming up every week in Khartum area for the last four weeks.
According to the World Health Organization, cholera is a highly contagious waterborne disease, which causes severe diarrhea and dehydration and can prove fatal in a few hours if not treated on time.
