The cost of printing of the note in your pocket has increased by 25 percent in FY 2025. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) gave this information on Thursday. The Reserve Bank said that during the financial year 2025, the total cost of printing notes increased to Rs 6,372.8 crore. The same expenditure last year was Rs 5,101.4 crore. During the financial year 2024-25, the price and quantity of bank notes increased by 6 percent and 5.6 percent respectively.
500 rupee bank notes share 86 percent
According to the news, RBI’s annual report of 2024-25 states that during 2024-25, the share of 500 rupee bank notes decreased marginally, at 86 percent, in terms of price. In terms of quantity, the value of Rs 500 was the highest in the total bank notes, followed by the total bank notes in circulation, after which the share of Rs 10 was 16.4 percent of the bank notes. Low price class bank notes (Rs 10, Rs 20 and Rs 50) are 31. 7 percent of the total bank notes in total.
98.2 percent bank notes of Rs 2000 withdrawn
The process of withdrawing 2000 rupee bank notes started in May 2023 continued this year and at the time of the announcement, 98 out of Rs 3.56 lakh crore has returned to the banking system by 31 March 2025. According to the report, during 2024–25, the value and quantity of coins in circulation increased by 9.6 percent and 3. 6 percent respectively. Also, during 2024-25, there has been an increase of 334 percent in the price of e-Rupaye in circulation. In vogue, currency includes bank notes, central bank digital currency (CBDC) and coins. Currently, there are bank notes worth Rs 2, Rs 5, Rs 10, Rs 20, 50, Rs 100, 200, Rs 500 and 2000 rupees in circulation.
50 paise coins are still in circulation
The Reserve Bank is no longer printing bank notes of Rs 2, Rs 5 and Rs 2000. There are 50 paise in circulation and 1 rupee, 2 rupees, 5 rupees, 10 rupees and 20 rupees coins. Regarding fake notes, the report said that 4 of the total fake Indian currency notes (FICN) caught in the banking sector during 2024-25 were caught in the Reserve Bank. During 2024-25, counterfeit notes caught in a price class of Rs 10, Rs 20, Rs 50, Rs 100 and Rs 2000 have decreased, while the price class of Rs 200 and Rs 500 has increased by 13.9 and 37.3 percent respectively compared to the previous year.
