Heavy rains caused havoc in Manipur: 883 houses were damaged, 3802 people affected

Heavy rains in Manipur have caused heavy havoc and in the last 48 hours, 3,802 people have been affected and 883 houses have been damaged due to floods and landslides across the state. Officials gave this information on Sunday.

He said that many areas of the state capital Imphal and several parts of Imphal Eastern district have been submerged, as the boiling river has broken the embankments in Khurai, Hingang and Chekon areas and is in spate.

He said that Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla visited several submerged areas of Imphal city, while Army and Assam Rifles soldiers rescued about 800 people from the submerged areas in the most affected district Infal.

In a statement issued by Raj Bhavan, it was said that Bhalla, Chief Secretary P.K. Kangla Nongpok Thong, Lariqyengbam Leicai and Singajamei Bridge along with Singh and other senior officials visited and assessed the overall situation.

As a result of floods and landslides in the state, at least 3802 people have been affected in the last 48 hours and 883 houses have been damaged. “By Saturday evening, a total of 3,275 areas or village have been hit by heavy rains. Two people have also been injured. 64 animals have been reported dead,” said an official.

He said that so far there have been 12 landslides in total across the state.

Another official said that there is news of waterlogging in the All India Radio Imphal campus and the premises of several offices and establishments including the Government Jawaharlal Nehru Medical Institute of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical Sciences after the River in the Chekon area.

He said that the water level of Iril river in Imphal Eastern district on Sunday crossed the danger mark, but has not yet broken the embankments. Local people and officials are trying to strengthen the embankments.

Another official said that the water level in Chekon and Wangkhai decreased on Sunday morning, but the situation in Khurai and Hingang constituencies still remains the same, where there was a submergence on Saturday.

The statement issued by Raj Bhavan said that during the yatra, the governor instructed the authorities to closely monitor the condition of the river and implement the precautionary measures. He said that the Deputy Commissioners have been instructed to arrange withdrawal and temporary relief measures for the affected people.

He informed that SDRF and NDRF units have also been alerted.
