Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to attend the 51st G7 Summit to be held in Kananaskis, Alberta province from 15 to 17 June 2025. This invitation is considered a major sign of reforming relations between recent stressful relations between India-Canada.
In 2023, the then Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made serious allegations against India in the murder of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. He had said that Indian agents could be involved in this. India dismissed these allegations and described it as ‘inspired by politics’. After this, the two countries expelled each other’s diplomats and the relationship was almost stalled.
There has been a change in bilateral relations since Mark Carney became Prime Minister in March 2025. Inviting Prime Minister Modi for the G7 conference is a big diplomatic step in this direction. Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude for this invitation and hoped that the India-Canada relationship would move forward on the basis of mutual respect and shared interests.
India’s involvement in G7 is an indication that India’s role and reputation on global forums is continuously increasing. India is not a member of G7, but has been invited as an important guest country. At the conference, the world’s most prominent democratic and economic forces will discuss topics like climate change, global security, economic stability.
This invitation is also seen towards curbing the increasing influence of Khalistani groups. This reflects Canada’s intention to re -connect with India. Prime Minister Modi’s participation in this conference will further strengthen India’s voice at the international level.
