Foreign policy front: uncertainty

by Rajeev Bansal
June 7, 2025

Efforts to take credit for the ceasefire of the US President, not silent on it, it is necessary

US President Donald Trump took credit for persuading India and Pakistan to “stop the fight”, threatened to shut down the trade with the two countries if not accepted. Not once, but also Washington, Riyadh and later, New Delhi was not only shocked by dusk and hugeness, but was shocked by the reporters in the same dilemma. “Come on, we are going to stop a lot of business with you, then stop it. Was thanked openly.

Then, India was made up with Pakistan, brought to a pan. It was shameful for New Delhi. To increase the distance from him, he had a heavy diplomatic struggle for more than two decades. It seemed that the conditions in India’s rights were suitable, then Trump turned it down. This statement for Indian policy-makers was much larger than diplomatic mistakes, it was a symptom of a deep problem.

Rukh changed: US Vice President J.D. Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Vance

Experts and experts were constantly raising sharp questions. Where did the mistake happen in Indian foreign policy? Has India reached the initial position again, and has been associated with Pakistan? What does India’s global partnership mean with the US? Partners of European countries, West Asia and South countries of South countries also appealed to reduce tension immediately. But if the pressure came, nothing worked.

Former Ambassador to Germany Gurjit Singh says about the attitude of the international fraternity, “India was sympathized for the Pahalgam terror attack, but Operation Sindoor was seen linking with the Kashmir issue between India and Pakistan.” He also said, “We have to increase our efforts to approve our views.” We need support to keep The Resistance Front (TRF) under the purview of the UNSC 1267 Committee. We need to present our anti -terrorism attitude with strategic partners vigorously. ”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s frequent visits worldwide and global leaders- Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin, etc., did not work in the current crisis. Everyone condemned the Pahalgam attack, but did not raise a finger on Pakistan. This period is disclosure when former US President Bill Clinton gave a strong message on President Pervez Musharraf during a visit to Islamabad in March 2000.

Former India Ambassador to the United Nations Ashok Mukherjee says, “The crisis was of a terrorist attack, in which innocent common people were killed. Diplomatic response should have come to this issue, not on India-Pakistan relations. “He further says,” If we take action to compete with terrorism, we will expect that America shows solidarity with India and help end Pakistan’s terrorist structure, including funding. If Pakistan does not agree, then ban it. ”Mukherjee’s opinion is a mirror of general perception in India.

Many people in the country see American attitude as betrayal. After all, what did the Modi government not do to woo Trump, crossed the limits. People’s sentiments against Pakistan are at its peak after Pahalgam slaughter. Many Indian tourists are canceling the Turki and Azerbaijan’s journey due to supporting Pakistan during the current crisis. Older people recall America’s previous deep friendship with Pakistan how it openly supported Islamabad during the Bangladesh war. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi then visited Washington and European capitals in eastern Pakistan to inform the most of the army. If he was of no use, he signed the Friendship Treaty with Russia and decided to send the Indian Army to help Bangladesh Mukti Vahini. And became a separate Bangladesh. However, this was decades ago.

Today, despite the ups and downs in relationships, Delhi and Washington will not let the relationship deteriorate due to Trump’s hugeness and the nature of taking credit for everything. The strategic concerns of both countries about China are shared. Washington’s warmth with India is due to the growing political and economic strength of China, which can challenge America’s superficial status in the coming years. For India, friendship with the US is like insurance against China in Asia. At the moment, India is angry, but in a few weeks the US administration may try to please India. Both sides then have to work to improve bilateral relations. It will take a few months to finalize the trade agreement. According to people associated with business interactions, this can occur by the end of the year. America is also eyeing India’s huge market, while India is looking towards America for high -tech cooperation, these are issues that will be effective in maintaining relations. It will take time for Indo-US relations to come in the situation before the current crisis.

Joanna Spear of Elliot School of International Affairs, Washington, says, “I think the two are strong, but President Trump is greatly influenced by changing events and immediately announces policies that deny the strength of relationships. India is an important partner and the United States would like it to balance against China, so weakening relations will be against American geopolitical interests. ”

India’s attitude

India did not directly respond to Trump. Instead, the government is trying to suppress America’s statement from the people of the country. India says that Pakistan was forced to ceasefire after attacks and losses on its air conditions. The Ministry of External Affairs said that the US officials spoke on the phone, but denied that there was a talk about the business during the talks. The scope for third party intervention in India-Pakistan issues was also denied. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar announced, “As far as Pakistan is concerned, our behavior with it will be bilateral and completely bilateral. It has been a national consensus for many years.” Pakistan has always tried to make its controversy international with India and bring a third country in the middle.

In my understanding, the next foreign policy will be really big thinking, long thinking, but wisely thinking, S.K. Jaishankar, Foreign Minister

When Prime Minister Modi came to power in 2014, he launched his government’s “neighborhood first” policy. Leaders of all South Asian countries, including the then Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif, sent them to their swearing -in ceremony. In 2015, Modi was coming back from the official visit to Afghanistan, while on Christmas day, Sharif suddenly descended to Lahore to wish Sharif on his birthday. But on January 2, 2016, the terrorist attack on the Pathankot Air Force whereabouts broke the attempts to restore peace. After that, in 2016 and 2019, terrorist attacks dissolved bitterness in the relationship. Modi’s trust completely broke and India made a new policy of “terror and conversation cannot run together”. Eliminating the special status of Kashmir caused relations. It has now been openly stated that Operation Sindoor is postponed, any courage of terrorists based in Pakistan will be strongly responded.

But the rest of the world sees this issue from a different perspective. Ali Mamadov of George Mason University says, “Kashmir remains one in the world’s most dangerous flash point. He is one of the most military deployed areas and its proximity to China adds another layer of strategic risk. In addition, the Ladakh region of the adjacent makes the situation and complex, where there is a border dispute between India and China. There are also clashes there a few years ago, how fast the stress can grow. ”

The second aspect of the crisis is that there have been many ups and downs in relations with India’s neighboring countries. In August 2014, Modi went to Nepal for the first time, when he was popular there, but the situation completely changed after the constitutional crisis and India’s Nepal’s blockade. Similarly, after the coup of Sheikh Hasina, India’s closest ally Bangladesh has now almost become an enemy country. Maldives and Sri Lanka have also come down in bilateral relations. China’s growing economic power and its presence in the neighborhood of India has given such an option to small countries that were not available earlier.

How did India change the stance

After the 1991 economic reforms, India opened its markets for the world, since then the relations of New Delhi with the US and West changed. In this period, relations with Israel have increased and New Delhi’s support for Palestinians gradually decreased. India was in the first non-Arab countries to recognize Palestine Mukti Organization (PLO) as the sole representative of the Palestinian people. The PLO office was established in Delhi in 1975. PLO chief Yasar Arafat was a close friend of India. Today, the sympathy for the Palestinians has decreased due to India’s galaxies with Israel.

In the US, India got a lot of benefit during Biden’s tenure. He could stand with his old friend Russia during the Ukraine War and buy oil at low rates despite Washington’s sanctions on Moscow. The Biden administration held very little talks with Pakistan. But nothing can be said in the case of Manmouji Trump. They do not know when hot, when you will adopt a soft attitude.

New Delhi needs to learn some lessons from the current crisis. It is best to draw red lines on issues of national interest at the cost of annoying the US President. Trump’s comments will not make a matter of being silent or ignoring. On Foreign Policy, Jaishankar says, “The next foreign policy will really be to think of big thinking, long thinking, but wisely.” India needs to focus wisely and focus on increasing its economy. Economic strength matters the most in the changing world.
