From August 1, a big change in UPI rules, from balance check to auto payments will be affected

If you make UPI payment through apps like Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm, then this news is very important for you. From August 1, UPI users will have to face some technical changes. In fact, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has issued some new guidelines to reduce the growing load on the UPI network. Their aim is to reduce unnecessary API request and make the system more stable and effective.

These changes will affect especially those users who check the balance several times a day or which more than one bank account is connected to the same mobile number. NPCI has asked all banks and payment service providers to implement this change by 31 July. Let’s know what these changes are and what will be their effect on common users.

Balance check permission only 50 times a day, limit on details of link accounts from mobile number

According to the new guidelines, now only 50 times a day will be allowed on checking bank balance through UPI apps. That is, if a person checks more than 50 times a day, then he will not be able to see the balance for that day. This rule will especially affect those who check the balance before repeated transactions or which more than one account is linked to the same mobile number.

Apart from this, the information of the bank accounts linked to the mobile number, ie the account list, will also not be able to access more than 25 times. This means that any user can see the list of their linked bank accounts only 25 times a day. This facility will be closed for that day on crossing this limit.

NPCI reported that this step has been taken to curb those banks and apps which were repeatedly sending API calls like ‘check transaction’ and ‘fetch account’ in the system. This causes heavy load on the UPI network and leads to the system down.

More than 7 thousand transactions every second, 5 hours of hindrance caused a lot of trouble

The popularity of the UPI system can be gauged from the fact that more than 7,000 transactions are happening every second. According to the data, around 16 billion transactions are being completed through UPI every month. If this service is stalled for just one minute, then more than 4 lakh transactions are affected.

A similar situation occurred in April 2025 when the UPI system remained closed for about 5 hours. Due to this, millions of users faced trouble, especially those who were trying to pay immediate payment or bill. NPCI believes that the API request being repeatedly behind the technical disturbances was also a big hand.

Therefore, now for control of these unnecessary requests, the balance check and account fetch limit has been fixed, so that the network can be kept stable and users continue to get service without interruption.

Now auto payments will be on time, process will not work throughout the day

NPCI has made another major change with auto payments. From now on, auto debit transactions related to SIP, Netflix or any other subscription will be processed only in non-pair of hours. That is, these payments will be made before 10 am, 1 pm to 5 pm and only after 9:30 pm.

The purpose of this change is that the UPI does not have excessive load on the UPI network in the hours and there is no delay in normal transactions. According to NPCI, removing subscription payments from peak time and shifting at non-time time will balance the load on the network and also reduce the possibility of downtime.
