Congress party general secretary Jairam Ramesh said that under MNREGA wages should be increased to Rs 400 per day and the Aadhaar-based payment system should not be made mandatory.
Ramesh posted on the social media platform ‘X’, “The trick to eliminate MNREGA in three easy steps. First step- not to give enough money to MNREGA for a decade, which kept the wage rate stable and the amount of pending payment increased continuously, which has reached Rs 21,000 crore at the beginning of this financial year.
He said, “Second step- Implementing the monthly/quarterly expenditure scheme of the Ministry of Finance, under which the limit has been set to spend only 60 percent of the total budget of MNREGA in the first six months of the financial year.”
According to Ramesh, “Third step- When there is no scope for the budget after settling pending payments, then stop the work effectively to the MNREGA beneficiaries.”
He said that the first and second steps have been implemented and the third step is now going to be revealed soon.
Ramesh said that in reality there is a need to take some other steps instead. He said, “The wages of MNREGA should be increased to Rs 400 per day, the Aadhaar-based payment system should not be made mandatory. Wages should be paid within a 15-day statutory time frame and laborers should be compensated on any kind of delay.
