Center started ‘GST Fortnight’ on completion of 8 years of Goods and Services Tax

New Delhi, 16 June (IANS). The Central Indirect Taxes and Customs Board (CBIC) started ‘GST Fortnight’ across the country on Monday, which will run till June 30 on the occasion of GST Day to be celebrated on 1 July.

The two -week -long campaign aims to spread awareness about Goods and Services Tax (GST) and help to solve the problems of taxpayers.

Helpdesk has been set up to provide guidance and assistance in all Central GST (CGST) Commissionerates across the country.

This initiative has been launched on the occasion of completion of eight years of implementation of GST in India. GST was implemented in the country on July 1, 2017.

This initiative has been initiated at a time when Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) has announced significant changes in the process of filing returns which will be effective from the tax period of July 2025.

After the implementation of new changes, the monthly GST payment form GSTR-3B cannot be edited.

According to the CBIC, this means that businesses will not be able to change any details manually after filing. Instead, now this form will be filled automatically on the basis of sales data from other forms like GSTR-1 and the form will have to be improved in advance through GSTR-1A.

GSTN said that this step is being taken to improve accuracy between GST returns and to prevent revenue leakage. Additionally, a tough time limit is being initiated for filing returns. From July 2025, taxpayers will not be allowed to file any GST returns after more than three years of due date.

This rule will apply to all types of returns including GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-9, GSTR-4 and others.

The change was part of the Finance Act, 2023 and will now be implemented on the GST portal.

Additionally, taxpayers have been advised by the CBIC to review their records and submit any pending returns before the new rules are implemented to avoid permanently locking out.
