The government on Monday issued a notification for the 16th census of India with caste calculations in the year 2027. The last time such census took place in the year 2011. The notification issued by the Union Home Ministry on Monday stated that the reference date of census across the country except Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh will be March 2027, while the reference date in Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh affected by snowfall will be 1 October 2026. This time caste calculation will also be done in the census.
It is noteworthy that Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the preparations for the upcoming census along with the Union Home Secretary, General Registrar and Census Commissioner and other senior officials on Sunday, a day before the notification was issued. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the census will be done in two phases. In the first phase ie operation (HLO), the residential status, property and facilities of each house will be collected in the operation (HLO).

Subsequently, in the second phase i.e. Population Count (PE), the demographic, socio-economic, cultural and other information of each person will be collected in each house. About 34 lakh calculations and supervisors and about one lakh 30 thousand census workers will be deployed for census activities. Let me tell you that earlier 2011 census took place. The census to be held in 2021 was postponed due to Korona epidemic.
This census is 16th from the beginning and 8th census after independence. The upcoming census will be done through digital medium using mobile application. Provision of self-killing will also be made available to people. Very stringent data security measures will be implemented to ensure data security at the time of collection, dispatch and storage.
Calculation will be done in two phases
This time the process of census will be completed in two phases. The first phase will be completed by 1 October 2026, while the second and final phase will be completed by 1 March 2027. The entire census process will end by 1 March 2027, which will be completed in about 21 months.
