A serious matter related to the country’s judiciary is in discussion these days. A three -member inquiry panel has made serious conclusions about the huge amount of cash received from the official residence of Justice Yashwant Verma, former judge of the Delhi High Court and currently in the Allahabad High Court. The committee has made it clear in a detailed report of its 64 -page that the cash met Justice Verma’s store room and recommended impeachment against him.
What is the matter?
At around 11.35 pm on the night of 14 March, there was a fire at Justice Verma’s residence in 30 Tughlaq Crescent in New Delhi. While extinguishing the fire, the fire brigade personnel and the people present saw that the burnt or half -bundles of 500 rupee notes were scattered in the store room. Everyone was surprised to see this.
After this, the Supreme Court constituted a committee of three senior judges, including:
Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice (Punjab and Haryana High Court)
GS Sandhawalia, Chief Justice (Himachal Pradesh High Court)
Anu Shivraman, Judge (Karnataka High Court)
What was said in the committee report?
The committee recorded statements of 55 witnesses and also questioned Justice Verma directly. Many shocking facts revealed in the report:
The cash was found in the store room, which was under direct control of Justice Verma.
Only Verma or his family members could visit the store room.
More than 10 witnesses confirmed to see the burnt notes with their eyes.
According to a witness, “As soon as I entered the room, I saw that there was a pile of notes of 500 rupee to the right and in front.”
Accused of tampering with evidence
In the report, the role of Justice Verma’s personal secretary Rajinder Singh Karki and his daughter Dia Verma is also said to be suspicious:
Karki allegedly told the fire brigade that the report should not mention the burning of notes.
According to the report, Karki and Diya played an active role in destroying the evidence or cleaning the room.
Although Karki denied the allegations, the statements and electronic evidence of the witnesses prove his refutation as false.
Now what next? Employment preparation
The committee has said that sufficient grounds are available for impeachment proceedings against Justice Verma. The report said that it was not possible to keep such a huge cash in the store room without Justice Verma’s information or consent.
After this report, the then Chief Justice (CJI) Sanjeev Khanna has also recommended impeachment against Justice Verma.
Justice Verma’s side
Justice Verma says that he and his family are innocent. He alleged that a conspiracy was being hatched against him and he never kept any cash in the store room. He has described the matter as a conspiracy to tarnish his image.
Question on the credibility of the judiciary
The case has not only questioned the credibility of a senior judge, but has also launched a debate in the society regarding the transparency and credibility of the entire justice system. It is clear from the report of the committee investigating under the supervision of the Supreme Court that the accountability of judges should also be strictly fixed.
conclusion
This case related to Justice Yashwant Verma has become one of the most sensitive matters in the history of the judiciary. If impeachment proceedings occur in Parliament, it can become a parable, which will show that no one above law and morality, no matter how high he holds.
