Prior to February 2022, the Modi government used to import only 0.50 percent oil from Russia. However, in 2025, this volume has increased rapidly to 30–35 percent. According to officials of the Ministry of Petroleum, now Russia has joined India’s major oil suppliers. According to reports, the current situation may remain in the coming days. During the last three years-it has been a Syrian struggle, a Gaza crisis or the current Iran-Israel stress-India has not had any difficulty in getting oil from Russia.
The policy of buying oil from Russia continues
Given the increasing uncertainty globally, the Indian government will continue the policy of maximum oil procurement from Russia. India’s public and private oil companies are actively contact with Russian suppliers to further increase the purchase of oil.
Government companies are making daily reports
According to sources, a team of officials of the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Petroleum is evaluating the current status of petroleum products, oil imports and availability of domestic reserves in the country. The situation in the global crude oil market is being monitored at the high level of the government.
Government oil companies have been instructed to prepare reports daily. Along with this, there are indications that due to the ongoing instability in international crude oil prices, India is also considering imported additional oil from Latin American and African countries.
Oil will also increase from other countries
The Ministry of Petroleum, headed by Hardeep Singh Puri, has clarified that India aims not only to purchase large -scale crude oil from countries like Russia and America, but also to increase imports from countries like Nigeria, Mexico, Angola and Guyana.
Given the position in the Middle East, supply from Iraq, Saudi Arabia and UAE may be somewhat affected. Currently, India imports about 35% of its crude oil requirement from Russia, 19% from Iraq, 14% from Saudi Arabia, 10% from UAE and 5% from America.
India is the third largest crude oil importer in the world
In the year 2025, India has become the third largest crude oil importer in the world. India imports an average of 5.1 million barrels of crude oil daily. The country gets about 86 percent of its total crude oil requirement from abroad. Due to this, any problem related to crude oil prices or supply becomes a matter of concern for India at the global level.
