After the BJP was attacked by the BJP on the 50th anniversary of the emergency of the emergency by the then Indira Gandhi government, the Congress retaliated and a scathing attack on the Modi government, the Congress on Wednesday alleged that in the last eleven years, there has been a “systematic and dangerous” attack on Indian democracy, five times the five -fold attack, which could be described as “undeclared emergency@11”.
The Congress alleged that the government is weakening the Parliament and ending the autonomy of constitutional bodies. The opposition party also claimed that “uncontrolled disgusting speech and oppression on civil freedom”.
In a statement, Congress General Secretary (Communications in -charge) Jairam Ramesh alleged that the critics of the government are regularly maligned, deliberately hatred and fanaticism by the ruling establishment, the protesting farmers are called “khalistani”, and the supporters of caste census are called “urban Naxalites”.
He claimed, “Mahatma Gandhi’s killers are being glorified. Minorities are living in fear of their lives and property. Dalits and other marginalized groups have been inconsistently targeted and the ministers giving hate speech have been rewarded with promotion.”
His remarks have come on a day when the government is celebrating ‘Constitution Hurry Day’ on the anniversary of implementation of Emergency. In his statement, Ramesh said, “In the last eleven years and thirty days, Indian democracy has been subject to a systematic and dangerous five times attack, which can be best described as the best undeclared emergency@11.”
In addition to “uncontrolled disgusting speech and suppression of civil freedom”, he claimed “the constitution attacks, tax terrorism and scares of business and institutions, control over media and misuse of investigative agencies” claimed that “unannounced emergency” is applicable.
Claiming the attack on the Constitution, Ramesh said that during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Prime Minister is seeking the mandate of ‘400 crosses’ for the new constitution and to cheat Babasaheb Ambedkar’s legacy. The Congress General Secretary said, “The people of India refused to give him that mandate. He voted for, protected, secure and forward the economic, social and political justice inherent in the current constitution.”
He also alleged that the Modi government is “weakening the Parliament” and constantly wiring parliamentary norms. He said that MPs have been suspended arbitrarily to raise the issues of public concern and the government has refused to discuss important national issues.
He said, “Major Bills are being forcibly passed. Parliamentary committees are being sidelined.”
Ramesh also accused the government of “ending the autonomy of constitutional bodies”. He alleged, “The CAG has become irrelevant. The honesty of the Election Commission has been severely compromised. Serious questions have been ignored on the honesty of assembly elections in some states. The voting time and phase have been set to benefit the ruling party. The commission has been silent in front of the divisive rhetoric of the Prime Minister and senior BJP leaders.”
The Congress leader further alleged that the center-state relations have been destroyed and the BJP has used funds to demolish the opposition-led state governments and often bought MLAs.
He said, “The Governor’s office has been misused to prevent bills in opposition -ruled states and to intervene in appointments in universities. The Center has ignored the constitutional financial system by highly using cess to deprive the states of their proper revenue part.”
Ramesh also accused the government of damaging the judiciary and said that there has been a certain policy of quietly threatening through delayed promotion, punitive transfer, retirement jobs for humble judges and selective implementation of collegium recommendations for humble judges.
Accusing tax terrorism and intimidation of businesses and institutions, Ramesh said that the fear of regulatory vengeance has negatively affected the business leaders who have previously been vocal.
Ramesh alleged, “Investigation agencies have been made weapons to protect a preferred business group. Major properties including airports, ports, cement plants and even media houses have been handed over to this group.”
He also claimed that major educational institutions have faced arbitrary demands. He claimed that the voices of about 20,000 independent civil society have been suppressed. Ramesh further claimed that the media has come under unprecedented pressure and the journalists and news outlets criticizing the government are facing threats, arrests and raids.
He said in his statement, “The owners are pressurized to appoint government -friendly journalists, and government advertisements and permits are used as a tool to control editorial materials. State broaders funded by taxpayers have been forced to troll the opposition and pursue the divisive narrative.”
Ramesh alleged that the right to information, which was a powerful weapon in the hands of powerless people, has been neutralized. Alleging large -scale misuse of investigative agencies, Ramesh claimed that institutions like ED, CBI and Income Tax Department have been deployed to harass and discredit leaders of various opposition parties.
He said, “Investigation agencies were used as an election bond of Rs 8,000 crore as an electoral bond for BJP. Those who change the party and join BJP automatically become ED-free and CBI-free.”
