On Thursday, 26 June 2025, an encounter between security forces and terrorists started in Basantgarh area of Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir. The encounter took place just a week before the Amarnath Yatra, which is scheduled to begin on July 3. The Indian Army launched this joint campaign under ‘Operation Bihali’, which includes the Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police.
Security forces had received intelligence that terrorists were hiding in the Bihali area of Basantgarh. The encounter started after the contact was established at around 8:30 am. According to officials, four Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists are trapped in the forest, and the campaign continues despite rain and fog. IGP Jammu Zone Bhim Sen Tutti said that the encounter is going on and the search operation is going on.
The incident took place in April 2025 in Pahalgam’s terrorist attack (26 people died), after which India carried out Operation Sindoor. Security has been increased for the Amarnath Yatra, and mock drills were also done at Baltal Base Camp for this journey, which runs till 9 August. Pilgrims have been advised not to travel alone and stay with the security convoy.
