The recent alleged gang rape case of a 24 -year -old law student at South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata has now reached the Supreme Court door. A petition (letter petition) has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking immediate judicial intervention in the case.
Petitioner Advocate Satyam Singh Rajput has demanded a CBI inquiry under the supervision of the court to ensure free, fair and time -bound inquiry from political influence.
In addition, the petition has demanded immediate security for the victim, her family members, witnesses and her legal representatives.
The petition has also demanded the apex court to instruct to implement comprehensive security measures including compulsory CCTV monitoring, women safety cell and regular security audit in educational institutions.
In addition, an interim compensation of Rs 50 lakh has also been sought for the victim’s medical treatment, rehabilitation and legal expenses in the petition. Also, the petition urged the court to take action against the public representatives who embarrassed the victims.
On the evening of 25 June, a student was allegedly gang -raped inside a law college in the town of Kolkata. The police have arrested the three accused within 24 hours. The names of the three accused are Monojit Mishra (31), Jab Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20) who were alumni or employees of the same law college.
According to the police, the accused named in the FIR will be produced before the ACJM of Alipur, South 24 Parganas, where they will be requested to send them to police custody for a proper investigation of the case.
The alleged sexual harassment took place on Wednesday (June 25) between 7:30 pm and 10 pm in the Law College campus. According to the official, one of the accused allegedly sexually harassed, while others were involved in crime. The victim’s family lodged a police complaint against the accused and the police have taken prompt action in the case.
The two accused, Monojit Mishra and Jab Ahmed were arrested the next day (26 June) near Siddharth Shankar Roy Shishu Garden near Talbgan Crossing in Kolkata. Pramit Mukhopadhyay was arrested from his house the same night. The police have seized the mobile phones of the three accused.
The officer visited the scene and kept him safe until a forensic investigation was done. He requested to be detained for further investigation.
