Nipah virus has once again knocked in Kerala. On 4 July 2025, the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune confirmed Nipah in a 38 -year -old woman from Palakkad. After the death of Malappuram’s 18 -year -old girl, the final report of her sample is awaited. The initial test of both of them came positive at Kozhikode Medical College. Malappuram’s girl was admitted to a private hospital in Kottakkal with fever and shortness on 28 June. He died on 1 July. Nipah was feared after the postmortem. The woman of Palakkad was admitted to a private hospital in Perintalmanna on 1 July, where she is on a ventilator.
Health Minister Veena George said that the Nipah protocols have already been implemented. Alert continues in Malappuram, Palakkad and Kozhikode. More than 100 people are placed in a high-risk contact list. Health workers and postmortem employees are in Quarantine.
The main source of Nipah is considered fruit bats. The presence of bats near the patient’s house in Palakkad is expected to have a Juneotic transmission. Nipah was confirmed in a 42 -year -old woman in Malappuram in May, which later recovering.
ICMR has developed a 100% accuracy portable Nipah detection kit. Work is going on on the MRNA vaccine for Nipah in association with CEPI. The Health Department has created a containment zone within a radius of three kilometers and has implemented strict protocols in hospitals. It is a matter of concern for Nipah to emerge repeatedly in Kerala since 2018.
