The Government of Bihar has taken a major initiative to empower the economic status of Scheduled Castes and Tribes (SC/ST) class farmers. The government has launched a pond construction based fisheries scheme in the plateau areas, which will give thousands of fishermen farmers a source of sustainable livelihood.
Farmers of eight districts of southern Bihar will get benefit
The benefit of this scheme will be especially the farmers of Scheduled Castes/Tribes of Scheduled Castes/Tribes of Scheduled Castes/Tribes of eight plateau districts of South Bihar – Banka, Aurangabad, Gaya, Kaimur, Nawada, Jamui, Munger and Rohtas. The possibilities of agriculture and fisheries were limited so far due to lack of water bodies in these districts and geographical conditions.
What is the plan?
Under this scheme run by Bihar government:
The ponds will be constructed with government assistance.
A large part of the cost for the construction of the pond will be given in the form of subsidy.
After construction, farmers will also be given training, necessary resources and technical assistance for fisheries.
Under this scheme, a provision of assistant facilities like drinking water and irrigation has also been made.
A step towards self -sufficiency
This scheme is a meaningful effort towards making “self -sufficient fisheries farmers”. This will increase the income of farmers of SC/ST community, while the rural economy will also get new strength. The aim of the government is to make the farmers of these classes economically empowered through modern fisheries.
Statement of government officials
An official of the State Fisheries Directorate said:
“There are immense possibilities of fisheries in the plateau areas, but farmers fall behind due to lack of resources. The government’s plan will work to bridge this difference and provide new opportunities for self -employment to local farmers.”
