New Delhi, 8 July (IANS) Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau of Investigation (AAIB) has submitted its preliminary report on the Air India 171 accident to the Civil Aviation Ministry and other concerned officials.
NDTV reports said that the top government officials have reported that this report based on initial assessment and initial findings is expected to be public later this week.
Air India flight AI 171 to London crashed into a medical college hostel only a few seconds after flying from Ahmedabad Airport on 12 June. This tragic accident killed 241 people aboard the plane and 19 people on the ground.
Both CVR and FDR of AI 171 were recovered. The first of these met on June 13, 2025 from the roof of the building at the accident site and the second on 16 June 2025.
Following the unfortunate accident of Air India flight, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) immediately launched an investigation and a multi-disciplinary team was formed on 13 June 2025 as per the prescribed criteria.
According to the International Protocol, the team constituted is headed by the Director General of AAIB and it includes an aviation specialist, an ATC officer, and representatives of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which is the US manufacturing and design government investigating agency and is required for this investigation.
Earlier, the black box was usually sent abroad for decoding in countries such as UK, US, France, Italy, Canada and Russia due to lack of infrastructure to analyze black box data from domestically major accidents in India. However, with the establishment of AAIB lab equipped with all kinds of features in Delhi, now both the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder can be decoded.
