Bs7 norms are coming soon: India’s automobile industry has gone through many major changes in the last few years due to environmental reforms. BS6 in 2020 and then in April 2023 BS6 Phase-2 norms were implemented. Now once again the subject of discussion remains, BS7 Emission Norms. This will be another major step towards further reduce the new standard pollution. But its effect will be felt as a major change from the auto industry to consumers, at every level. Let’s know in detail about the background of BS7 norms, its potential outline, and its effects-
What are BS Norms?
India Stage (BS) Emission Norms are the standard that sets the maximum limit of pollutants emanating from vehicles. These are determined by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of the Government of India and implement it the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). They are based on Euro Norms. Starting with BS1, India has now reached BS6 Phase-2. While BS6 limited the amount of sulfur to 10ppm, BS6 Phase-2 made the Real Driving Emission (RDE) test mandatory, so that pollution emissions can be monitored on actual roads of the vehicle. BS7 will be even ahead of this.
Possible outline of BS7 Norms
Although the government has not yet issued official documents regarding BS7, there have been some indications on the basis of Euro 7 norms. The Euro 7 is planned to be implemented from 2025 and India is considering adopting the same model.
Many types of major changes are likely in BS7 norms. Which are as follows –
1. Even more strict limitations of emissions of NOX (Nitrogen Oxide) and PM (Particulate Matter) emissions can be applied.
2. Preparations are prepared to calculate harmful particles produced by brakes and friction of tires under this norms. These particles can enter the human body through the breath and cause health problems, especially in urban areas where the level of pollution is high.
3. Advance version of OBD Diagnostics System will be available.
4. RDE testing limit will expand. Tests will also be possible in various seasons, height and traffic conditions.
5. There are also plans to bring EVS and hybrid vehicles under similar standards.
Impact on auto industry with the implementation of BS7: Increase in prices of vehicles-
With the implementation of BS7, auto companies will have to make many technical changes in the engine and exhaust system. This can increase the cost of Rs 25,000 to 80,000 per vehicle.
R&D investment increases
Companies will have to spend more on research and development so that models that meet new standards can be prepared.
Crisis for small companies
While big brands will bear this investment, it will be a big challenge for small auto companies and two-wheeler manufacturer companies.
Dealer Stocking and Inventory Pressure
Before the BS7 is implemented, dealers will have to sell BS6 vehicles fast, otherwise it may have to face huge losses.
Impact on consumers
With the implementation of BS7, with a large-scale change in the auto industry, it is also going to affect customers in many ways-
Increase in prices of vehicles
Due to technical changes in BS7, the prices of vehicles will increase, which will make it expensive for the common consumers to buy cars and bikes.
Effect on mileage
The emission control mechanism may cause a slight decline in mileage. However, some companies are working on fuel efficiency to balance it.
Older vehicles will be reduced value
As soon as the BS7 is implemented, the resale value of BS6 and old norms vehicles may be affected.
What is the opinion of experts about BS7 norms
According to the experts of the auto industry, if the BS7 is implemented, it will have to be announced at least 18-24 months in advance so that the auto industry can be prepared.
At the same time, the government should consider subsidizing companies for new technological changes or introducing incentive schemes to customers.
With the implementation of this rule, it can be more effective to remove old vehicles by keeping pace with scrapage policy and adopt BS7 vehicle.
Electric vehicles will get promotion
Norms like BS7 will be indirectly promoting EVs in a way. These norms do not apply directly to EVs, but due to rising costs and strictness, sales of petrol and diesel vehicles are likely to fall. This can benefit the EV market.
Possible year of BS7 to be implemented
Although no official announcement has been made on the issue yet, experts believe that BS7 norms can be implemented around the year 2027-2028. After the Euro 7 was implemented in 2025, India can take 2 to 3 years to adopt it, as in the case of BS6.
The BS7 Norms will be the next decisive steps in India’s pollution control efforts. This step is extremely important in terms of environment, but it will not be easy for auto industry and consumers. This change can be successfully implemented along with proper deadline, policy support and technological innovation. Companies which optimize this change in time, they will be able to survive in the coming time.
