On 9 July 2025, Bharat Bandh has been called by 10 central trade unions and farmer organizations across the country. The strike is against the alleged “anti -labor and corporate supporters” policies of the central government, including privatization of power distribution companies in Uttar Pradesh and opposition to four new labor laws. It is estimated that more than 25 crore employees will participate in this strike, thereby possibility of disruption in areas such as banking, postal, transport, coal mining, and electricity. But will schools, colleges, and banks remain closed? Let’s know.
Schools and Colleges: The central or state governments have not made any official announcement to close schools and colleges for July 9. Most educational institutions are expected to be open normally. However, in some states such as Karnataka, the closure of the school can be considered due to transport disruption, which is probated by the evening of 8 July. Schools are also likely to be open in Kerala, but due to the affect of bus services, students and teachers may have trouble coming and going. Parents are advised to contact their schools.
Bank: Several bank unions including All India Bank Employees Union (Aibea) have confirmed participation in the strike. This may affect branch operations, check clearance, and customer services in public sector banks and cooperative banks. However, the full bandh has not been officially confirmed, and private banks can function normally. Customers should expect limited services for a few hours.
Other services: Postal services, insurance, and power supply is likely to be disrupted, as 27 lakh power workers and postal workers are joining the strike. No holiday has been declared in government offices, but the absence of employees can slow down services. Stock market, such as NSE and BSE, will normally be open from 9 am to 3:30 pm.
Citizens are advised to plan in advance for transport and disruption of essential services. Local administration and police have been deployed to maintain law and order.
