The recent heart attacks in Hasan district of Karnataka have raised concern. Many of them were youth, after which Chief Minister Siddaramaiah described the Kovid-19 vaccine as a possible reason for this. However, the expert committee constituted by the Government of Karnataka in its report on 7 July 2025 made it clear that there is no relation between the Kovid vaccine and the sudden heart attack deaths. The study was conducted under the chairmanship of Dr. KS Ravindranath, Director, Institute of Heart Religience, Shri Jaydev.
According to the report, Hasan died of heart attack from May 28 to July 1, 2025, out of the age of 20. The committee found that the cause of these deaths is traditional risk factors such as high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes and smoking. They did not get any direct connection with the vaccine or covid infection. Dr. Rabindranath said that heart attack in India is happening 10 years ago compared to western countries, and it has increased by 15% among the youth.
The Central Government also cited studies in ICMR and AIIMS, saying that the Kovid vaccine is safe and its serious side effects are extremely rare. Instead of vaccine, genetic tendency, pre -existing diseases and lifestyle factors such as alcohol or excessive exercise can be responsible for heart attack. Siddaramaiah’s comment was objected by Biocon’s Kiran Majumdar-Shaw, describing it as wrong and misleading.
The committee has recommended a strong system, screening and awareness campaign in youth for monitoring heart diseases. In Hasan, the Health Department has increased the investigation under Hridayya Jyoti and Gruha Arogya schemes. The government has appealed people to immediately go to the health center if there is symptoms like chest pain or shortness of breathing.
