Bollywood actress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kangana Ranaut appeared before a special court here on Friday in a defamation case filed against her by veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar.
In the afternoon, Ranaut appeared before the special magistrate court for hearing cases related to MPs and MLAs.
Akhtar filed a complaint against Ranaut in 2020. Akhtar alleges that during an interview on television, Ranaut made derogatory remarks against him, which damaged his reputation. The case was initially heard in a magistrate court in suburban Andheri.
The matter was transferred to a special magistrate court named for matters related to MPs and MLAs after Ranaut was elected MP from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh in 2024.
The petition requested the issuance of non-bailable warrants against Ranaut. The court gave the actress the last chance to appear before her during the last hearing on Akhtar’s plea.
Akhtar had alleged in his complaint that Ranaut dragged his name during an interview, referring to a “faction” in Bollywood after actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s alleged suicide.
