Great Malayalam writer MT Vasudevan Nair died at the age of 91, PM Modi expressed mourning

MT Vasudevan Nair, a great Malayalam litterateur and Jnanpith award winner, passed away, was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kerala after a heart attack. Sources in the hospital gave this information on Wednesday. He was 91 years old. Others including PM Modi have expressed condolences.

He was undergoing treatment for more than a month due to illness. The author was admitted to the hospital on the morning of 16 December due to respiratory problems. He died in a private hospital in Kozhikode at 10 pm on Wednesday night.

Although his condition remained critical, the doctors had said that his body was reacting to medicines, which would have raised hopes and comforting that dear writers could be cured. However, by night hospital officials confirmed his death.

A hospital source told PTI, “MT has died.” Ever since he was hospitalized, he was under the supervision of a multi-disciplinary team of experts, including cardiologists and critical care experts.

His last rites will be performed at Mavur Road crematorium at 5 pm on Thursday. The body from the hospital will be brought to his residence on Kottaram Road. People will see at home till 4 pm.

Popular known as MT, he wrote nine novels, 19 short story collections, directed six films, written about 54 screenplays and published several collections of essays and memoirs.

His novel Nalukettu (ancestral home) established him as a literary symbol and is considered a classic in Malayalam literature. He also wrote several acclaimed compositions including Asuravithu, Manju and Kalam.

The literary achievements of MT gave him many other awards in 1995, India’s highest literary honor Jnanpith Award as well as the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, Vilar Award, Valathol Award, Valathol Award, Azuthachan Award, Matra Literature Award and ONV Literature Award.

In 2005, MT was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian honor. He received the JC Daniel Award for life achievement in Malayalam Cinema in 2013 and was awarded the Kerala Jyoti Award, the highest civilian honor of the Government of Kerala in 2022.

MT Also served as the editor of the motherland weekly for many years.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday condoled the demise of noted Malayalam litterateur MT Vasudevan Nair and said that his works have shaped generations with a thorough investigation of human emotions and will continue to inspire many people.

Expressing grief, Modi said that Nair was one of the most respected celebrities in Malayalam cinema and literature. Modi said, “He gave voice to the silent and marginalized people. My sensations are with his family and fans. Om Shanti.”

Condoling his death, Governor Arif Mohammad Khan said that MT’s death is a deep loss for both Malayalam and Indian literature.

He expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and said, “Mr. MT, rich in this versatile talent, who enriched literature, cinema and journalism, wrote some of the best compositions in Malayalam literature. As a writer, MT supported modernist sensations and supported modernist sensations and as an editor. Increased. God should provide liberation to his soul. “

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that we have lost the talent that gave Malayalam literature a leading place in world literature with the death of MT Vasudevan Nair. Vijayan said in a statement, “This is an irreparable loss not only to Kerala but also the world of Malayalam literature.”

Describing MT as a leading personality in the field of short story writing, novel writing, screenwriting, film direction, journalism and cultural leadership, Vijayan said that through his works, he expressed the beauty and complexity of Kerala’s life.

He said, “He achieved global fame in the cultural traditions of Valluvanadu, which reflects the lives and ethos of the people there. In doing so, MT impressed not only the personal minds of Keralites but also the collective consciousness of the people of Kerala through his writing through his writing.”

Leader of Opposition in Kerala Legislative Assembly VD Satishan said that MT was the person who determined the strength of the pen how to write and speak in their mother tongue.

Satishan said, “MT is a symbol of the greatness of the nation, which is full of the sanctity and brightness of Malayalam.”

In a statement, the state government said that it would be officially mourned on 26 and 27 December in honor of MT. The statement said that the Chief Minister directed that all government programs including the scheduled cabinet meeting should be postponed on 26 December.

Born in 1933 in Kudluor, a bizarre village in Palakkad district of Kerala, MT created a literary world through writing over seven decades, which attracted both common people and intellectuals equally.

At that time, Kudalkal was part of Malabar district under the Madras Presidency of British India. He was the youngest of the four children of T. Narayanan Nair and Ammalu Amma.

His father worked in Sealon, while MT spent his early year in his ancestral home in Kudluor and a village in the present Trishur district. The early life and environment of MT influenced his literary sensations.

He completed his schooling from Malamkavu Primary School and Kumaranellur High School and graduated in Chemistry from Victoria College, Palakkad in 1953.

His professional journey began as a teacher and village servant at a block development office in Taliparamba, Kannur, followed by a sub-editor in 1957 at the Matrubhoomi Weekly.
