Jaipur. The Rajasthan Police’s Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) successfully organized a two-day state-level conference at the Rajasthan Police Academy on 18 and 19 July. The objective of this important initiative was to form a strong and coordinated strategy to deal with all forms of human trafficking, including severe issues such as bonded labor, sexual trafficking, border cross trafficking and online child sexual abuse. At the closing ceremony, Director General of Police Rajiv Sharma accepted the global and local challenge of human trafficking. He said that smuggling is a serious problem in all its forms, not only here, but all over the world. The problem is very big, but our response is still falling short. We need to make significant improvements in our efforts.
DGP Sharma expressed concern over the re -smuggling conditions of children after rescue operations, which reflects the need for better coordination between police, other government departments and civil society organizations. He especially emphasized an inter-state collaborative approach to deal with inter-state smuggling.
Target to catch real criminals:
DGP Sharma emphasized the need for intensive investigation in organized crimes, especially smuggling cases. He said whether we are identifying real criminals, or are we accusing some people found on the spot only during rescue. He termed intensive investigation to create strong cases and ensure successful prosecution in courts.
Director General of Police Human Rights and AHTU Malini Aggarwal said that this conference was organized under the leadership of Human Rights and Human Rights of Rajasthan Police as per the instructions of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. Its main objective was to understand the emerging trends of human trafficking, improve methods of investigation, identify and prevent victims, effective rehabilitation of the remaining people, and implement strict legal action against smugglers.
DGP Aggarwal described human trafficking as a serious, organized and cognizable offense violating the fundamental rights of individuals. He said that poverty is the root cause of this and according to ILO’s 2024 report, the annual profit from human trafficking has increased to $ 236 billion, which is an increase of 37% since 2014.
Focus on modern challenges and digital solutions:
Director General Intelligence Sanjay Aggarwal emphasized that smuggling is not limited to big cities, but often starts from small towns and villages. He stressed the need to check the background of children begging on the streets or selling goods. He said that smugglers are now using technology, so the police should also take advantage of digital equipment and innovation to combat these crimes.
Release and regional challenges of the free booklet:
On the occasion, a booklet “free” was also released on the best practices to compete with human trafficking, which would serve as a reference tool for all officers. A poster providing important information on human trafficking was also released to display police stations and government offices.
The conference discussed all aspects of human trafficking up to modern dangers such as online vocational sexual exploitation (CSEC) using the traditional forms of the bonded labor system prevalent in rural areas of Rajasthan to cyber enabled virtual crimes and various social media platforms.
According to NCRB’s 2022 data, 117 cases of human trafficking were registered in Rajasthan that year, in which most of the 461 victims rescued were forcibly victims of labor. Rajasthan’s strategic position makes it an important transit and source area for smuggling victims, where the weaker population is often wooed under false promises.
