Chandigarh | Kailash Jain, president of the Industry Trade Board Chandigarh, has reacted sharply when the Chandigarh administration suddenly demolished the famous furniture market of Sector 52. He not only described this action as “insensitive and indiscriminate”, but also called it a direct attack on the living of hundreds of shopkeepers and their families. North India’s largest furniture market was
This furniture market of Sector 52 was not only Chandigarh, but a major and popular trading hub of North India. It was active for the last 40 to 50 years and customers from states like Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir used to come here for a large number of shopping. The traders here had paid regular payments of revenue, tax and license fee to the administration for years.
Kailash Jain said in a press statement, “This market used to provide affordable furniture to the general public. The traders here were not only self -sufficient, but were also providing employment to many people. In such a situation, overthrowing this market without any revival scheme is a very interesting and unjust decision.”
“Destruction without rehabilitation”
Jain expressed serious objection to this move of the administration, saying that if rehabilitation is arranged for the poor living in slums, then why discrimination against traders running business for four decades? He also asked the administration whether the contribution of traders and their rights is considered negligible?
He further said- “It may be the responsibility of the administration to evacuate the government land, but while doing so, the principles of humanity, rehabilitation and justice should be followed. If these members of the trade board were paying revenue for years, it was the duty of the administration to arrange an alternative space before destroying them.”
Crisis on the livelihood of traders and employees
Due to this demolition, not only shopkeepers, but hundreds of employees working with them have become unemployed. These include artisans, loaders, drivers, finishing staff and salesmen. Now these families are caught in the economic crisis, and the question of livelihood has arisen in front of them.
Demand for immediate rehabilitation from administration
Kailash Jain has demanded from the Chandigarh administration that immediate rehabilitation should be arranged for these traders. He also urged that the administration should communicate with business representatives to find solutions so that such tragedy does not happen again.
