On Saturday, heavy rains in Delhi-NCR made heavy waterlogging in many areas on the day of Rakshabandhan, causing the national capital to come to a standstill. However, its impact on flights was minimal.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the entire Delhi. Throughout the day, there is a possibility of heavy rains and thunderstorms with shower, while there may be strong rains in eastern and central Delhi.
The IGI Airport advised passengers to contact their airline for a possible delay in flight. According to the airport, the flight operation is normal at the moment despite the bad weather.
IndiGo and SpiceJet also alerted the passengers over the possibility of traffic jams in the city. A passenger said that it took 3 hours to reach the house (Mayur Vihar) after landing the flight from Thiruvananthapuram at 11:45 pm, while the distance was only 25 km. On the way, waterlogging was found at many places and hours of traffic jam at Sarai Kale Khan intersection.
Many underpass submerged
Continuous rains led to a drop in temperature and people got relief from heat-water. But in many areas the underpass drowned and the roads filled the water. Busy intersections like Connaught Place, Mathura Road and Pragati Maidan also saw heavy waterlogging. Meanwhile, the water level of the Yamuna river is reaching the danger mark close to 205.33 meters, which has increased the possibility of flooding in the low -lying areas. Pragati Maidan received more than 100 mm of rain in 24 hours, while Lodhi Road and Safdarjung received 80.7 mm and 78.7 mm respectively.
Due to Rakshabandhan and the possibility of daylight throughout the day, heavy traffic jams were seen in many places. On Friday, there were long jams near NH-44 and Haryana border.
IMD has also warned of heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh and issued an orange alert in three districts. Since June 20, more than 200 people have died in Himachal in rain -related accidents.
