Possibility of reconsideration on order to send stray dogs to stray dogs in Delhi, CJI Gavai said 'will see'

The Supreme Court’s order to send stray dogs to the shelter home in Delhi is expected to reconsider. Chief Justice B. R. Gawai has said that the issue will be reconsidered again, indicating that the court may reconsider the earlier order. This statement has come amid increasing concern between animal rights workers and the general public. The Supreme Court had ordered all stray dogs to be sent to Shelter Homes on 11 August 2025 in Delhi and NCR region.

This order was given in view of increasing dog bites and rabies cases. The court had said that this step is in the interest of public safety and strict legal action will be taken by any person or organization to obstruct this order. However, after this order, many animal rights activists and general public have described it as inhuman and impractical. Actor John Abraham has written a letter to the Chief Justice appealing to review the order.

Describing it as illegal and inhuman, he said that Delhi’s stray dogs are an integral part of the city’s ecosystem and sending to the shelter home can adversely affect their good. Apart from this, Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale has also written a letter to the Supreme Court and appealed to review the order. Describing it as cruel and inhuman, he said that such an order would cause cruelty with stray animals and the failure of municipal authorities is responsible for the situation, which should be resolved through a comprehensive counseling process.

Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, while supporting the order, has said that this step is towards freeing Delhi from the fear of rabies and stray animals and in this process the good of the animals will be given priority. The possibility of reconsideration on the order of the Supreme Court has given rise to a new debate on the issue and now it has to be seen what the court decides on it and what will be the process ahead.
