It is one of the most miraculous and powerful forms of Hanuman ji. According to the Ramayana, there was a war between Ravana and Lord Rama. Then Ravana sought help from his brother and King Ahiravan of Hades. Ahiravan fainted Lord Rama and Lakshmana with his magical powers and took them to Hades and burnt five lamps there. Ahiravan had a boon from Mata Bhavani that he could be killed only when someone would extinguish the lamp burned in five directions.
When Vibhishan came to know about this, he immediately informed Hanuman ji. Hearing this, Hanuman immediately went to the Hades. There he got his son Makardhwaj, who was the gatekeeper of the Hades. For this, Hanuman ji had to fight with his own son. After defeating him, Hanuman ji could enter the Patal Lok.
Lord Rama and Lakshmana were taken hostage by Ahiravan in Hades. He built a magical circle. Then Hanuman took the form of Panchmukhi to fight him, so that the lamps lit in five different directions can be extinguished from each face. After extinguishing the five lamps, Hanuman killed Ahiravan and brought Lord Rama and Lakshmana back from the Hades. Each face of Panchmukhi Hanuman also has a special meaning.
