A new batch of more than 3,700 pilgrims left for both base camps on Monday amid tight security to visit Baba Barfani at the Amarnath Cave Temple, located at an altitude 3,880 meters in South Kashmir Himalayas. Officials said the batch of 3,791 pilgrims under the protection of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and police personnel left in 148 vehicles between 4.33 am on Sunday to 33 minutes to Monday, and left from Bhagwati Nagar base camp here. The batch included 3,067 men, 522 women, nine children, 192 sadhus and sadhus and a transgender.
He said that the first convoy of pilgrims took 1,208 pilgrims in 52 vehicles and left for Baltal Marg, a small but more steep climbing Baltal route in Ganderbal district, after which the second convoy of 2,583 pilgrims out of 96 vehicles left for 48 km long traditional Pahalgam route in Anantnag district. According to official data, the number of pilgrims going on Amarnath Yatra has been seen declining for the last few days.
On eighteen July, 7,908 pilgrims left for Amarnath while the number was 6,365 on 19 July and 4,388 on July 20. The batch of pilgrims on Monday is the lowest pilgrim batch till date. In the last few days, the number of people coming to the counter for registration on the spot has also decreased. Officials said that till now more than four lakh people have registered online for pilgrimage. Last year, more than 5.10 lakh pilgrims visited the holy cave temple.
