On this day, unmarried and married women worship Gauri-Shankar. This festival is considered more difficult than Karvachauth because while in Karvachauth the fast is broken after seeing the moon, in this fast the waterless fast is observed the whole day and the fast is broken only after the next day’s worship. A belief associated with this fast is that women who observe this fast go to Shivalok after happily living with their husbands, just like Parvati ji.
Married women observe Haritalika Teej fast to keep their marital life intact and unmarried girls observe Haritalika Teej fast to get their desired groom. This fast was first observed by Goddess Parvati to get Lord Shiva as her husband. On this day, Gauri-Shankar is especially worshipped. Women observing fast on this day wake up before sunrise, take bath and do full make-up. For worship, a pavilion is made with banana leaves and the idol of Gauri-Shankar is installed. Along with this, Lord Ganesha is installed and Shodashopachar worship is done with sandalwood, rice, incense, lamp, fruits, flowers etc. and all the items of Suhaag are offered to Parvati ji. In the night, people stay awake singing bhajans and kirtans and Aarti is performed three times and the story of Shiva Parvati marriage is heard.
