Kumbh Mela is of four types (Kumbh, Ardh Kumbh, Purna Kumbh and Maha Kumbh). Kumbh Mela is organized every time according to the position of the planets. Earlier in the year 2013, Mahakumbh was organized in Prayagraj. Whereas Kumbh Mela was organized in Haridwar. Maha Kumbh Mela is considered the most auspicious. After that comes Purna Kumbh Mela, Ardh Kumbh Mela and then Kumbh Mela.
Maha Kumbh Mela
The Maha Kumbh Mela, held once every 12 years, is considered the most sacred event of this festival. Marking the 12 cycles of the 12-yearly Kumbh Mela, this extraordinary event attracts devotees from across the country. Taking a holy bath in the Ganga, Saraswati and Yamuna during this period is believed to enhance spiritual powers. The Maha Kumbh Mela will be held in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh from January 13 to February 26, 2025. This religious fair lasts for about 30 to 45 days. Last time Mahakumbh was organized in Prayagraj in 2013. Now after 12 years, the religious city is once again hosting the Mahakumbh Mela.
Ardh Kumbh Mela
The Ardh Kumbh Mela, a smaller version of the Maha Kumbh, is held every six years in Haridwar and Prayagraj. The event also attracts a large number of pilgrims, as it bridges the gap of 12 years between full Kumbh Melas. Ardh means half..that is why it is organized after six years.
Kumbh Mela
The Kumbh Mela is held once every three years at four places, Haridwar, Ujjain, Nashik and Prayagraj, on the banks of holy rivers. Though this fair is small in size, it attracts devotees to delve into the spiritual depths of India. During this period, lakhs of devotees take bath in Ganga, Kshipra, Godavari and Sangam (at the meeting place of three rivers).
Purna Kumbh Mela
The full Kumbh Mela is organized every 12 years at four holy sites. After Mahakumbh, this is the most prominent form of this revered festival. It attracts lakhs of devotees who gather to take a holy dip in the sacred rivers of India. It is believed that their sins are washed away by this holy dip.
