आत्मानम सतातं रक्षेद दारारपि धनारपि ॥
The meaning of this shloka mentioned in Niti Shastra is- wealth should be protected to save oneself from any sorrow or calamity. Women should be protected even by spending money. But it is more important than women and money that a person protects himself.
According to Chanakya, a wise person should save a little money for bad times and protect it. In times of need, protecting your wife is more important than saving money because your wife is your life partner. Chanakya says that there are many occasions where money is of no use, but your life partner is. A wife’s role is important in old age.
Chanakya also thinks that a person should protect himself more than wealth and women. That is, a person is more important than both of these. If a person is destroyed, then what will be the existence of wealth and women. Therefore, it is more important for a person to protect himself when the time comes than saving money and protecting women. According to ethics, the poets of Upanishad also say that no one loves anyone, everyone loves themselves.
